The Tattoo Post

I got my Kestrel tattoo colored in a couple weeks ago by the mysterious R.G. I'm really happy with it, and though we are going to eventually add in some background- fall leaves and whatever, it feels like it's finished. R.G. is the best. I don't know why he's mysterious, he's not very mysterious actually, we just used to call him "the mysterious R.G." a long time ago. I like watching him work, I don't know a lot about tattooing, but to me he works like a painter, mixing colors on the fly, and working the needles like a brush.

We talked about what makes a piece of art timeless, be it a tattoo or a painting, but that's a tough question, and we didn't really find an answer. I like that about RG. He has a lot of integrity and is not afraid to question his own work. But you know you're going to get a good tattoo. I couldn't be happier with mine, I feel that nature tattoos done in a non gimicky way have a certain timelessness to them, but of course that's just one guy's opinion. As tattoo trends come and go maybe it's impossible to have a design that is timeless. Or maybe it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. In any case, it's one of the reasons I don't like designing tattoos. People ask all the time but it's just not in me.


I only have a couple of tattoos myself, so this was only the third time I've been needled. In the past I always thought I was a wuss, because both times I got all light headed and felt like I was going to pass out. The pain was never really bad, so I didn't understand why I'd feel like that. But now I know what was up. It was my blood sugar and the adrenaline rush you get when you're about to get tattooed. This time I tried drinking some soda and eating a bunch of cookies and I didn't have any problems. It was really nice talking to RG and his girl Gill, rapping about art and New York and Mead Valley. Good times.

So I got a new computer and while transferring over all the files I found about 30 images of my work tattooed onto people. I knew I had these but forgot about them. These are all images that were sent to me or I found on message boards. It's flattering but sorta weird at the same time. The robot stuff I was doing a few years back is the most popular theme, I don't know how timeless they will be but maybe by the time we start worrying about that we will all have blurry colored blobs on our arms anyway. All I know is my fans are awesome, and it's an honor to have my work permanently etched into their skin. Take a look...

Shepherd and Shepard

We saw Shepard Fairey on TV last week, I think it was Sunday morning. My mom called and told me to put on channel 4. They were talking about his support and involvement with the Obama campaign. The host kept bringing up that Shepard is a “CEO in Pumas” I don’t think she did much research on him. He did a great job, I have heard Shepard talk before and he's always on point.


He handles himself well, I think I'd be freaked out to be on TV but Shepard seemed very comfortable up there. Props. One of the things they talked about- his iconic image of Obama and the infamous big banner seen here:


I found out last week that Riverside resident/activist/businessman/ Derric Swinfard was responsible for making this happen. You can read about it here on his blog.


Derric is a great guy, he’s really getting things started here in ol’ Riverside. His company, Monster Media was one of the first to install solar panels on the roof and take advantage of the solar energy rebate for Riverside. I think this is just the start and despite the polluted air that we receive from L.A. and Orange County, Riverside is cleaner than it's ever been. Derric has recently met with the mayor of Riverside, Ron Loveridge, and apparently he's hoping to make Riverside one of the "greenest" cities in California. Right on. I think Derric is making some things happen, I know I am looking at how my family lives and trying to change things.


I met with him and his wife Erin last week- we always have a good talk- being politically similar in our views and sharing stories about our two year olds. So they have put together an art show called Sea No Evil which will be showing at the Riverside Art Museum. All kinds of artists are participating- Revok, Saelee Oh, Ed Templeton, Shepard Fairey, Maxx242, Kelsey Brooks, Alex Kopps, C.R Stecyk III, me and tons more. Looks like Shepard will be D.J.ing, and Matt Costa will be performing.



All of the work will be auctioned off and the show is a fundraiser for Sea Shepherd, a conservation group that targets illegal whaling, poaching, shark finning and illegal destruction of habitat on the high seas. Captain Paul Watson, the founder of Sea Shepherd will be on hand to give a presentation on the status of our oceans. I hear this guy gives a great talk. He’s rammed whaling ships and sunk them! Dang.

The piece I put in is an older wall cluster made up of pieces of wood and found objects. I don't work in this style too much anymore, but I see it as an important part of my development. Installing it in the museum made me think about revisiting some of these clusters I used to do. My piece:
"Hills of Riverside", approx. 60" x 36", mixed media, 2001-2003.



The auction is a silent bid, and you have to be there that night to bid on pieces. I started my minimum bid pretty low at $500, I just want to generate some donation money for Sea Shepherd and hopefully let someone enjoy a nice piece.

We are excited to announce, this year the art show will be held at the prestigious Riverside Art Museum in the historical downtown area of Riverside.

On the night of July 12th, 2008, the art show will completely take over the
entire art museum, 3 floors, including special guests Matt Costa playing music on the roof (3rd floor) And Shepherd Fairey spinning records. The first two floors will display donated art from noted artists, available for purchase through silent auction bidding the night of the show.

It promises to be an event to remember giving the opportunity to raise increased awareness and funding for Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Captain Paul Watson, founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, will be the featured speaker, giving an update on what is happening globally with oceanic conservation.

Props to my homies... yo

This week’s blog is not about me so much. I have been hunkered down in the studio with projects and doing family stuff lately. Turned 33 last week, went to Disneyland again, working on wierd conglamoration of art projects, totally cleaned and revamped my studio, etc. No real adventures lately. Just working and stuff. Yawn.

I did go to the Skullphone show at RAM last week. The dumpster pictured above is a nice touch, I wonder if anyone will complain about it’s presence right in front of the museum. The mysterious Skullphone infiltrated various parts of the museum, and you really have to look around and explore a bit to find it all. Props to Mr. Skull...



I got to help Skullphone and Jeff Ribaudo a few weeks ago as they made some limited edition mono prints.

And props to my homie Maxx who is off to Japan in a couple days for the debut of his Bearbrick in conjunction with Zac Pac. Sweet. I was this close to going with him last night, but the $1800 plane ticket put a damper on things. Next time homie. If you're in Japan, go check it out...


The real props should go to Rosie and Maxx for the birth of their baby, Maddox Anakin Gramajo!

And props to mi madre- her birthday is today. Happy Birthday mom (yes my parents read this blog).

Props to Wes Anderson. I love "watching" Royal Tennenbaums while I work. Just saw Bottle Rockets and The Darjeeling Limited last week. The missus and I love movies. Just saw Juno (not Wes Anderson of course) the other day finally, some nice David Choe and Tara McPherson art. There was more I think (Kozyndan?). I have to kick myself in the ass, because they asked me too to get them some art for her bedroom and I was super busy and totally flaked. I can't believe myself sometimes. Dammit.

Props to Rachel Tiede for taking a stand. Rachel worked at Art Center College of Design and I knew her as a student and am friends with her husband (we graduated together). Recently the college has had an uprising of sorts, with students protesting the direction of Art Center president, Richard Koshalek. Apparently he is more interested in the various architecture projects (pricey Frank Gehry library) and travelling to Europe than meeting the needs of students- financial aid, better classrooms, parking etc. After taking a stand against Koshalek, Rachel’s boss, Nate Young (Chief Executive Officer for the school) resigned in protest. The following week at a student government meeting Rachel defended her former boss and was promptly let go by the school. I don’t know all the details but Rachel is cool and I appreciate that she stood up for the students. The tuition is like $15,000 per semester, no joke, students should be of the highest priority. And finally, speaking of Art Center, mad props to you Donkey! Mark Miller gave you to me as a graduation gift six years ago and we’ve had some great times over the years. But you’re finally falling apart, three of your legs are broken, your ears are busted and your fur is falling out all over the studio. Maybe it’s from Shannon trying to ride you all those times. You’re busted, broken and I have to bid farewell. I left you near the trash dumpster, and went to lunch, when I came back you were gone! I hope you are warming the hearts of others on your journey!
